The 4×4-i dial on the centre console, and below the centre stack, may be turned to a LOCK position to mend the force split at 50:50 up to 40km/h, and might be turned within the other way for 2WD for fuel-saving front-wheel drive.
The X-Trail’s body will move a few ton, leaning perceptibly through corners if the driving force is pushing on and pitching perceptibly beneath braking. The steering is agreeable, however. though there’s a listless response to initial steering inputs, the leather-wrapped tiller is well weighted and travels from lock to lock swimmingly.
